Stress kills Practically everyone knows it, but all too many people do little to confront the issue of stress in their own lives

Stress kills. Practically everyone knows it, but all too many people do little to confront the issue of stress in their own lives. One way by which many people attempt to reduce their own personal stress is through the use of massage therapy - and few massage therapies are as well-known and popular as the form known as Swedish massage. First recognized as a form of massage discipline nearly three centuries ago, the Swedish massage has become famous for its basic approach to massage therapy and its ability to be easily learned by new massage therapists.

Swedish massage defined

The Swedish massage discipline is a form of massage that utilizes five distinct massage strokes to provide healing and rejuvenation to tired, sore, and even injured muscles. Its ability to improve oxygen absorption in the human body, increase blood flow and improve the recovery rate for damaged muscle tissue, and accelerate the body's own ability to rid itself of toxins are but a few of the discipline's many claims to fame. Despite these well-documented health effects, however, most massage recipients tend to focus on its capacity for providing almost immediate relaxation and release from stress and all its attendant complications.

Examining the strokes

As noted, Swedish massage encompasses five distinct strokes, through there are numerous variations on each. The most well known of these is the effleurage, which is a massaging stroke that entails using either the entire hand or the thumbs to massage in one motion from the neck to the spinal base. Alternatively, the strokes can glide from the shoulders to the tips of the fingers. This stroke is often used at the beginning of the massage to enable the masseuse to familiarize him or herself with the recipient's bodily needs. To accelerate blood flow, the masseuse will use petrissage strokes that knead the muscles in a rolling and pressing manner.

Tapotement is a Swedish massage stroke that has sometimes been likened to a drumming motion on the body. These percussive taps are designed to provide release from any muscle tension, and are accomplished with the palm's edge, fists, or fingertips. In cases where there is pain in the lower back, vibration techniques are important parts of any Swedish massage. These shaking motions are known to improve blood flow and muscle contraction.

Of course, to really accomplish deep healing and relaxation, every Swedish massage should include friction strokes. These are easily the most deep-reaching of all Swedish massage strokes, as the masseuse utilizes circular strokes using the tips of the fingers or thumbs. It is with friction that most of the toughest muscle knots and tightness are relaxed, enabling muscle tissue and fibers to renew their normal healing process.

Taken together, the five strokes of any Swedish massage congeal into one of the most vibrant forms of muscle stress and pain reduction therapy yet discovered. For millions of people around the world, this simple but undeniably effective aid to healing and relaxation remains the preferred method for relieving the daily stress of life and encouraging the healthy recovery of tired, sore, and damaged muscle tissue.
