The only way to actually prevent HIV transmission was through the use of condoms or safe sex with a single partner. But you cannot force people to use condoms and there are men and women who don’t really like the frequent use of condoms. Researchers at the University of Utah have now come up with the latest in condoms just for these types of people! Molecular condoms could be the answer to thousands of people out there who want to be sexually free but fear the reprisals of the deadly disease.

How it works?

Having a single sexual partner is the best for everyone to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease but there are people like commercial sex workers who just have no other alternative. They have to work with customers who may or may not wear a condom. Commercial sex workers and poor indigent women in Africa and South East Asia may not be sexually aware of condoms or the HIV disease and what unprotected sex can do. But the gel can not only prevent any unwanted pregnancies but it also prevents HIV infections through the vaginal tissues. The molecular condom is the most convenient alternative for such women. The molecular condom is a vaginal gel that turns into a semi solid gel like material in the presence of semen trapping any potential diseases in to gel form. Semen and infective particles like HIV, Hepatitis and several other infective specks are suspended in a semi solid meshwork that prevents them from infecting the woman. And it works with semen, bacteria and viruses too.

How does it work and just how viable is it?

Human testing of the gel is still three to five years away and it will take several years more before it can be made for sale. Researchers are also trying to add anti retro viral therapy to the gel so that any potential HIV in the semen and the vaginal canal is suspended as well as prevented from replicating. Although this is not a brand new idea, previous inventions like intravaginal gels, rings and films did not work as there were problems like allergies to the strong medications present in the gel and patient non compliance. Women who used the spermicidal gel complained of severe itching with the gel. The most common problem noted by researchers was that the anti retro viral therapy could not remain patent in the vaginal canal for 12 hours. That meant that a reapplication of the gel became really necessary for it to have an effect.

Researchers have since then tried to use variations like molecular gels that are originally gels but turn into liquids at body temperature to absorb and block HIV particles and semen; and then turn into gel again to release anti HIV medications. Another tweak that new researchers are working on includes the use of acidic and alkaline gels that can kill dangerous bacteria present in the vaginal canal. Upcoming research variants include the use of polymers to kill the HIV virus while still blocking the sperm cells. But there are high hopes that a cheap variations can be made for large scale use as soon as possible.
