1. Plan your talk. Realize that your listener is doing you a favour by allowing you to take up his time, so you must your part in being prepared rather than aimlessly jumping from one subject matter to the other. Also, keep in mind the rule above.

3. Vary your tone of voice. Have highs and lows, this will naturally attract your listener to pay attention to you.

4. Don’t speak fast or too slow. People usually talk fast because they worry that the listener will lose interest but when you do this, the message that you are trying to send is usually lost. Be moderate.

5. Match your body language to the words that you are uttering. Project energy and positiveness.

6. Talk in the language of your listener. What this means is that, if you are talking to 10 year old school kids, you must strive to talk in a way they understand. If you are talking to farmers than your talk must suit them. Connect with your audience and they will connect with you.

7. Proper use of language. In whatever language you are talking, you should try your best to use that language properly. Use the right pronunciation and grammar.

8. Tell stories. Humans love stories and if you can weave a story or two in your talk it will help to keep the attention of your listeners.

9. Be interested. Be genuinely interested in the other person, in your audience and you will be rewarded.

10. Use silence. Yes, clever use of silence can go a long way in keeping the interest of your listener.

11. Always get your facts right. Leave out the things that you are not sure. This is vital to build your credibility.
